Monomoy Girl left little doubt as she kept her three-year-old season winning streak intact by becoming the 2018 Kentucky Oaks winner. Going off as the 2/1 second choice, the Brad Cox filly was in a bit of trouble early on but rallied to close the homestretch and outlast longshot Wonder Gadot at the wire. It was a brilliant showing.
After winning the coveted Rachel Alexandra Stakes to establish her candidacy earlier in the season, Monomoy Girl went on to win the Ashland Stakes for her first Grade 1 score. Entering as one of the best options in the Oaks, what hampered interest slightly was the presence of Midnight Bisou, who went off as the optimal 5/2 favorite.
Winning the 2018 Santa Anita Oaks in devastating style, Midnight Bisou simply never fired in the right way around the second turn and was caught making up ground well in to the heated part of the homestretch. It was a tough loss for the filly, who was undefeated in three starts during the 2018 campaign heading in to the Kentucky Oaks. Faith may have been dented partially when it comes to Midnight Bisou’s abilities, but she is still a great filly to track through the summer.
Wonder Gadot’s jockey attempted to suggest that there was a foul during the home stretch battle with Monomoy Girl, but officials ruled fair play annointing her as the 2018 Kentucky Oaks winner.
Monomoy Girl paid out $7.20, $4.60 and $3.60 while Wonder Gadot paid out $14.00 in second place. Midnight Bisou came in third at $3.20.
Now with a sterling record of 6-1-0 in seven starts, Monomoy Girl has became a million dollar winner with $1,120,750 in career earnings with just under half of that amount generated as the 2018 Kentucky Oaks winner. What a way to kick off what’s going to be an awesome weekend.
Don’t forget that the 2018 Kentucky Derby is Race 12 tomorrow on Saturday, May 5th.
