Spoiler alert! Justify is the fastest horse in the next leg of the Triple Crown according to the 2018 Preakness speed ratings. These figures are presented by Brisnet, who churn out these marks based on adjustments which allow us to compare horses from different races running at different tracks.
Justify has been installed as the 1-2 favorite in the upcoming Preakness Stakes this weekend, which should come as no surprise considering how dominant he’s been in his last two races while maintaining an undefeated record of 4-0-0.
The crazy part about the 2018 Preakness speed ratings is that Justify’s mark of 102 isn’t his fastest. He ran 114 at the Santa Anita Derby while destroying Bolt d’Oro and the rest of the field. No horse has really come close to something that high.
Good Magic is a lesson in consistency, presenting ratings of 99-98-99 over his last three races which include the Kentucky Derby, Blue Grass Stakes and the Fountain of Youth Stakes. His 3/1 number is well justified, and seeing as how we constantly overlook him as a threat and he always seems to break the top-three he’s getting harder and harder to ignore.
Two new shooters hold the third highest 2018 Preakness Stakes speed ratings but entirely differing odds. Quip will finally make his Triple Crown debut after skipping the derby and is the 12/1 third choice. He posted a 95 speed rating his last time out running second in the Arkansas Derby, behind Malibu Moon.
Also coming in at 95 is Diamond King, a 30/1 longshot who won the Federico Tesio, has some fans in the Maryland area but is otherwise an afterthought. I would not sleep on him.
Surprisingly, entering the fray at 15/1 to steal the second leg of the Triple Crown is Lone Sailor, who finished 8th in the Kentucky Derby. Part of the reason he continues to be rated so high is that he posted a staggering 100 rating while finishing second in the Louisiana Derby. He’s capable of running flat out, but even his top end speed in optimal conditions can’t match what Justify produced in the slop at Churchill two weeks ago.
Bringing up the rear in the 2018 Preakness speed ratings is Sporting Chance, who posted a dull 79 in the Pat Day Mile on derby day.
If you ever needed a bigger reason to back Justify, you have it now. He’s a great package bet with Good Magic in a relatively safe exacta to go 1-2 again.
