John Sadler could very well have two winners this coming weekend. Songbird will test the Cotillion on a packed race card at Parx, but the trainer will also have the favorite in the lesser known Los Alamitos Derby. Favored strongly in that race is Accelerate, his three-year old winner of the Shared Belief Stakes.
Posting as the 2/1 favorite on the morning line, Accelerate will probably end up cracking the gate as the even money preference after the action floods in. He crushed the mile distance and looked like he had plenty left to offer down the home stretch, and needs to prove to horse players that he can handle the 1 1/8 mile distance to have a better chance at competing in the higher levels as the season draws to a close. That shouldn’t be a problem.
The runner-up from the Shared Belief Stakes was Semper Fortis, who opens with 3/1 odds of his own in the Los Alamitos Derby. He also showed well in a hard fought battle down the stretch, but it’s hard to believe that he has what it takes to truly be a winner. He hasn’t won a stakes race yet in two tries, and his other races have proven to be unsuccessful. Talent is there. Production is not.
The third choice ont he board is Blackjackcat who may be worth a flier depending on how you perceive his talent. The oddsmakers have built in insurance on this three-year old from over-performing because the potential is certainly there. The son of Tale of the Cat trains extremely fast, and is absolutely capable of stealing the show, but his stakes debut at the Del Mar Derby wasn’t all that impressive. He placed 6th in that race.
Curlin Road might be the steal of the Los Alamitos Derby. I really like what Steve Knapp has done with this horse. A rough start to his three-year season derailed hopes of a Triple Crown run for this son of Curlin but a fresh start after this past spring and summer has seeming given this horse time to mature. He was last out in a maiden special weight finishing second to Accelerate, and at 8/1 is the best value as a place bet.
Rounding out the Los Alamitos Derby are Sugar Buzz, Arizona Moon, Mishegas along with Chris and Dave.
