Arrogate Gets Ready for Pacific Classic

Champion Arrogate took to the Del Mar track for the second-last time before he is set to run in the TVG Pacific Classic (G1) on August 19. Arrogate was ridden by Martin Garcia, while usual rider Mike Smith and trainer Bob Baffert looked on, as the son of Unbridled’s Song worked seven furlongs in a time of 1:25 1/5. He was clocked in at the following fractions: :25 1/5, :37 1/5, :48 2/5, 1:00 3/5,¬†and 1:12 3/5, before galloping out to a mile in 1:38 1/5.

“It was a serious work,” said Baffert, who was happy with the work. “He didn’t need much encouragement. He’s showing no signs (of regressing following his fourth-place finish in the grade 2 TVG San Diego Handicap July 22). He’s moving forward. I’ve seen a big difference in him since that last race. He’s back to his old self again.”

Smith has ridden Arrogate in each of his past five starts, with four of them being grade/group one events that he won and increased his North American career earnings record to over $17 million. Smith also liked what he saw out of Arrogate. “He looked good,” said the Hall of Fame trainer. “He galloped out strong.”

Baffert said Arrogate will have one last workout on August 14 before he’s scheduled to run in the Pacific Classic. This year’s Pacific Classic will earn the winner an automatic entry into the $1 million Breeder’s Cup. The Pacific Classic is expected to be Arrogate’s final race of the year before the Breeders’ Cup.
