2014 Kentucky Derby winner, California Chrome, was incredible during his return to the race track on January 9th at Santa Anita, and now heads overseas to prepare for the $10 Million Dubai World Cup at Meydan Racecourse. There is a ton of optimism and excitement surrounding the 2014 Horse of the Year’s return from injuries and illness that cut his 4-year old season short.
Making his return at the San Pasqual, California Chrome dusted the competition with relative ease. He won by 1 1/4 lengths after holding the lead down the stretch, beating Imperative and Hopportunity over a distance of 1 1/16th in a time of 1:43.39. After the win, Alan Sherman was quick to announce plans to head over to Dubai. “We’ve got to pack our bags,” assistant trainer Alan Sherman said exuberantly. “We’ll be over there for almost three months.”
Preparations for California Chrome’s travel will be overseen by professionals, though trainer Art Sherman will stay state-side to watch over his horses here in the meantime. “It’s going to be a long trip—almost 24 hours—so he’s getting a lot of electrolytes, and he’ll be traveling with a vet, Chuck Jenkins.”
This year’s renewal will be an attempt for California Chrome to salvage his second-place finish at last year’s race in Dubai. He would finish behind Prince Bishop, then an eight year-old, in what was considered a lofty upset.
The Dubai World Cup runs on March 27th, 2016. California Chrome is also likely to be pointed towards the Pacific and the Breeders’ Cup Classic later this year. The last time California Chrome competed at the Classic in 2014, he finished third behind Bayern and and Toast of New York. It certainly seems like Sherman’s plan for this season is for his beloved champion to make up for past losses.
Without a shadow of a doubt, the world will be tuned in to see how California Chrome holds up to the travel and we’ll continue to bring you updates as the Dubai World Cup inches closer. Other recognizable names that intend to compete at the race include Hoppertunity, Keen Ice, Effinex and Candy Boy.
