Can Suddenbreakingnews Close in to Win Belmont Stakes?

Suddenbreakingnews Could Surprise in Belmont Stakes

Only five favorites have won the Belmont Stakes in the previous 25 races, including just three in the last 15 years following American Pharoah’s victory and run for glory in last year’s ‘Test of the Champion’. Suddenbreakingnews was posted at 10-1 on the morning line when the odds were announced at Wednesday’s Belmont Stakes post position draw. He’s the fifth betting choice behind favorite Exaggerator, and Stradivari, Destin and Cherry Wine.

Seven of the past 25 Belmont winners came from the Kentucky Derby after skipping the Preakness. That’s the case for dead one-run closer Suddenbreakingnews, who was closing strong to finish fifth in the Kentucky Derby following a poor trip. He also finished second in the strong Arkansas Derby behind another closer, Creator. Suddenbreaking news has three wins and four places in nine career starts. His great-grandsire Seattle Slew won the 1977 Triple Crown. His two grandsires, A.P. Indy and Afleet Alex are both graded stakes winners with Afleet Alex winning the Preakness and Belmont in 2005.

A rider switch to top jock Mike Smith is positive, and Suddenbreakingnews won’t be as far off the pace in the Belmont after running the slowest opening quarter mile of his career in the Derby. But his final mile time in the Derby was the fastest in the field.

Suddenbreakingnews arrived at Belmont Tuesday; one of the last horses in the field to be shipped in. Four other horses that ran in the Derby and skipped the Preakness will give the grueling Belmont a run, including Brody’s Cause, Destin, Creator and Trojan Nation.

The favorite is Exaggerator, who finished second in the Derby but turned the tables on Nyquist to win the Preakness Stakes.

In a big field and a race that could become a war of attrition late, Suddenbreakingnews’ pedigree and past performances could help him prevail knowing he’s perhaps best prepared and able to get the added Belmont distance. This is a classy racehorse with an explosive turn of foot and a proven pedigree.

The 148th Belmont Stakes is set for 5:32 p.m. CDT Saturday. NBC will televise the race.

The field is set with morning odds and post position draw completed today.
