A runner-up finish in the October 31st Breeders’ Cup Classic to Triple Crown Winner American Pharaoh gave gave oddsmakers enough reason to list Effinex as a 5-2 favorite in the $500,00 Clark Handicap.
The win was another notch in Effinex’s impressive run of late. The Clark Handicap marked his first career Grade 1 victory, which was preceded by wins in the Suburban Handicap and the Excelsior Stakes. He also has a third-place finish (Jockey Gold Cup) and a fourth-place finish (Woodward Stakes) on his 2015 resume.
He ran a really really good race [in the Classic] and I thought if I could just get him to perform like he did on Breeders’ Cup day, he maybe could win this,” said jockey (and Hall of Famer) Mike Smith. “He had to do a little bit more, they made him run today.”
Effinex’s winning time in the 1-1/8 run was 1:48.92. He paid out $7.00, $3.60, and $3.20. Second-place Hoppertunity returned $3.20 and $2.60, while third-place QLooks to Spare, who came in to the race at odds of 88-1, paid $10.80. The rest of the race order finish: Keen Ice, Race Day, Protonico, Shotgun Kowboy, Mr. Z.
A $2 Exacta paid out $29.00, a $2 Trifecta was worth $962.60, and those fortunate enough to hit on a $1 Superfecta were rewarded with a tidy sum of $1,614.10.
