Fountain of Youth Features Favorite Good Magic

The Road to the Kentucky Derby resumes Saturday, March 3 following two weeks off on the Derby trail. The races start heating up in March with the Championship Series assuring each race winner a spot in the Kentucky Derby. The 1 1/16 mile Fountain of Youth (G2) drew 10 runners in search of victory and Derby dreams, and the top four finishers receive qualifying points (50-20-10-4). The winner will see his stock rise while his odds fall on the Derby futures board.

One of the current Kentucky Derby co-favorites on the Wynn Las Vegas future book is Good Magic (9-1), who is the 7-5 favorite in the Fountain of Youth followed by Dale Roman’s-trained Free Drop Billy (9-2) and Strike Power (4-1), the sizzling sprinter who stretches out to two turns for the first time. Good Magic makes his 2018 debut after winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last November at Del Mar. The Chad Brown-trained son of Curlin has gained a ton of betting momentum and interest on the Derby trail, and we’ll find out Saturday if he’s worth his weight as a prohibitive favorite.

Strike Power and Storm Runner (15-1) are other horses that enter off a win. Promises Fulfilled (20-1) is one of three Dale Roman’s-trained colts in the field, and he makes his 2018 debut after finishing 3rd in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) last November at Churchill Downs. He ran on the lead the entire way until the deep stretch, and will try to get to the front again breaking from the outside post.

The 10 horse field for the Fountain of Youth in post-position order with Wynn future odds are:

1) He Take Charge (45-1)

2) Free Drop Billy (40-1)

3) Peppered (275-1)

4) Strike Power (40-1)

5) Storm Runner (100-1)

6) Good Magic (9-1)

7) Gotta Go (75-1)

8) Marconi (60-1)

9) Machismo (75-1)

10) Promises Fulfilled (65-1)

Storm Runner is a long shot of note who has raced on both turf and dirt. But in his Feb. 4 allowance win at Gulfstream, he recorded a strong Equibase Speed Figure (111), and finding horses with speed that are improving with the potential and pedigree to carry on a longer distance is key for value seekers with an eye on the Kentucky Derby.

A recap of the top Kentucky Derby contenders with current Wynn Las Vegas Future odds as of Feb. 26. The Kentucky Derby future odds continue to change with race results, and a win by Good Magic Saturday will make him the new favorite as he readies for a run in the Florida Derby.

1) Good Magic (9-1)

1) McKinzie (9-1)

2) Audible (14-1)

2) Bolt d’ Oro (14-1)

3) Justify (18-1)

3) Mask (18-1)*

4) Catholic Boy (20-1)

5) Restoring Hope (25-1)

Post time for Race 14, the Fountain of Youth is 6:09 ET on Sat., March 3 and the race will be televised on FS2 as part of the “FOX Sports Saturday at the Races” series.  The Kentucky Oaks prep is Race 8, the $200,000 Davona Dale (G2) for 3-year-old fillies going 1 mile. A total of 9 stakes races each with at least a $100,000 purse make March 3 at Gulfstream a big day of racing with lots of great betting opportunities.
