Dueling Grounds Oaks Preview

Sunday’s Dueling Grounds Oaks is Wide Open at Long Distance

If simulcast players want full fields to bet, then Kentucky Downs is your track. Sunday’s $200,000 Dueling Grounds Oaks has an overflow field of 12 with two also-eligibles on college day at Kentucky Downs.

In a wide open race for 3-year-old fillies with most tackling the marathon 1 5/16 miles for the first time, it might be worth wagering on the aptly named #6 Try Your Luck (7/2). She finished third in both Churchill Downs’ Grade 3 Regret and the $100,000 Ta Wee at Indiana Grand. She also finished first in Arlington’s Grade 3 Pucker Up but was disqualified and placed third.

#11 Outsider Art (3-1) is the favorite, but winless in six tries this year. She does have three show finishes this summer including in the Lake George Stakes (G2) when she showed good energy to close strong. She was outmatched in her recent stakes try in the Lake Placid (G2) against a very good group, and has a better shot to close against these.

With six starts under her belt,#5 Taralena (9/2) shortest race to date has been at 1 1/16-miles, with all six coming on the turf, including placing in the $100,000 Memories of Silver Stakes at Aqueduct in April. Julien Leparoux, annually a top rider at the meet, has the mount on Sunday. He’s ridden the daughter of Arch three times before.

Also eligible #13 Mines and Magic (4-1) and #10 Blame It On Me (8-1) complete the single-digit odds favorites. Mines and Magic was third in the Indiana Stakes (G2) in July then seventh in the Grade I Del Mar Oaks at long odds.

Kentucky Downs officials have lowered takeout and fine-tuned their betting menu to earn the top ranking of the Horseplayers Association of North America for the past few years. Racing like the $200,000 Dueling Grounds Oaks and $350,000 Derby on Sunday will have large handles in support of the Franklin, KY European-style all turf track.

The rest of the field for the Dueling Grounds Oaks includes #1 School Board Prez (30-1), #2 Harlan Country (20-1), #3 Inconclusive (20-1), #4 Galilea (12-1), #7 Leafy Shade (12-1), #8 Shelbysmile (10-1), #9 Mine as Well (20-1), #12 Celestial Insight (15-1) and #14 also eligible Quiet Business (12-1).
