Exaggerator Wins Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes

ExaggeratorThere was one heavy favorite going into Saturday’s $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes, and Exaggerator did not disappoint.

Exaggerator headed into Saturday’s race off a fourth-place finish in the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on the 31st of October, and broke from post nine in the ten-horse field. Exaggerator, a 4-5 favorite, and jockey Kent Desormeaux overtook the early 1-1/16 mile Jackpot race from leader Iron Dome.

Iron Dome led the first quarter of the race, clicking in at :23.49 seconds, but Exaggerator took over with ease after that, running a half in :47.53 seconds, and the first three-quarters in 1:13.47.

There was a slight bump along the way, however, when Sunny Ridge, who was the Champagne Stakes runner-up, briefly headed Exaggerator into the far turn. It wasn’t much of a challenge though, as Exaggerator was up to the challenge, taking over at the one-mile mark in a time of 1:39.90.

When it was all said and done, Exaggerator came away with the crown, finishing the 1-1/16 mile in 1:46.48, on what was described as a sloppy track.

Exaggerator brought back $3.80, $2.60, and $2.20. A return from second-place Sunny Ridge yielded $4 and $3.20. In third place, Harlan Punch, returned $5. Found Money, Whitmore, Forevamo, Texas Jambalaya, Memories of Winter, Cowboy Classic, and Iron Dome rounded out the top-ten.

Joseph B. Murphy bred Exaggerator in Kentucky, and was purchased in 2014 as part of the Keeneland September yearling sale for $110,000.

On the road to the Kentucky Derby, Exaggerator collected ten points. Nyquist leads the way with 30 points, and Exaggerator is now in second with 16 points.
