Kentucky Derby Betting Guide
Justify (3-for-3) and Magnum Moon (4-for-4) are undefeated, but neither colt raced at age 2. No horse has won the 1 ¼ mile Kentucky Derby after not starting as a 2-year-old since Apollo in 1882, leading to the dubious distinction, the Curse of Apollo.
Of the nine UAE Derby winners that have attempted the Derby double since 2000, the best finish for any of them was 6th place in the Kentucky Derby. UAE Derby winner Mendelssohn will try to snap that streak by winning the Kentucky Derby. Mendelssohn won the UAE Derby by an astonishing 18 lengths, and he was an equally astonishing $3 million purchase at the 2016 Keeneland September yearling sale.
This year’s Kentucky Derby is loaded with talented 3-year-olds, and while a majority will be market longshots on race day, know that last year’s Kentucky Derby produced big paydays in the exotic pools when favorite Always Dreaming won the Kentucky Derby but was followed by 33-1 and 40-1 longshots in 2nd and 3rd place. Those produced payouts of more than $330 on a $2 exacta and over $16,000 on a $2 trifecta. The $2 superfecta (top 4 finishers) produced a life-changing score of more than $150,000.
Other top contenders by morning line odds to watch and consider for your Kentucky Derby wagers are Audible (8-1), Bolt d’ Oro (8-1), Good Magic (12-1) and Vino Rosso (12-1).
