Kentucky Derby Points Leaders Heading into April’s Final Prep Races
The starting gate is becoming in focus as we turn towards the stretch in the Run for the Roses. Fifteen horses have qualified for the Kentucky Derby on May 7, and those 3-year olds are listed in the chart below.
Five Grade I prep races remain including the Florida Derby this weekend to start the first of five 170 points races (100-40-20-10). The Spiral Stakes is also this Saturday, April 2 (50-20-10-5). The top-four finishers in these designated Kentucky Derby prep races earn qualifying points into the Derby. A win in any of the these remaining races over the next three Saturday’s in April earns automatic entry to the Kentucky Derby: Spiral Stakes, Florida Derby, Wood Memorial, Blue Grass, Santa Anita Derby, Arkansas Derby, Lexington Stakes.
Since the points system debuted in 2013, two horses that finished No. 1 in the Derby points standings went on to win the Kentucky Derby – Orb in 2013 and California Chrome in 2014. The last two years, 20 points has been the lowest points total to earn a spot in the field of 20 for the Kentucky Derby.
So other horses to watch in the April prep races that are currently on the ‘bubble’ with 20 Derby points include: Forevamo, Dazzling Gem, Zulu and Outwork.
There are many other horses that are scheduled to make their final start in a prep race over the next three weeks with Brody’s Cause, Fellowship, Flexibility and Smokey Image among the most likely to move up or stamp their ticket to the Derby with a win.
Get ready to bet the Kentucky Derby and follow along in the final weeks prep races as the field is set for the May 7 Run for the Roses.
