Kentucky Derby Hopefuls Avery Island and Enticed Ready for 2018 Debut

Kiaran McLauphlin-Trained Avery Island and Enticed Set for Feb. 3 Derby Preps

The Road to the Kentucky Derby resumes on Feb. 3 and a pair of Derby hopefuls will make their 2018 debut for trainer Kiaran McLauphlin. Avery Island won his stakes debut by 4 ½ lengths at Aqueduct in the Nashua (G2) Nov 5., and then finished 2nd as the favorite in the 1 1/8 mile Derby prep Remsen (G2) at Aqueduct Dec. 2. He returns to that track for the 1 1/8 mile Withers (G2) on Feb. 3. Avery Island has had three solid works in January at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream Park’s satellite training facility ,and the sun of Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense will be one of the favorites to move forward again in the Withers.

Enticed has also been working well at Prairie Meadows Training Center, and the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) winner at Churchill Downs Nov. 25 looks poised for his 3-year-old debut in the 1 1/16 mile Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park Feb. 3. Enticed, regally-bred by multiple Grade 1 winner Medaglia d’Oro, captured his Sept. 4 debut at Saratoga and was third behind Firenze Fire and subsequent Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Good Magic in the Grade 1 Champagne on Oct. 7.

“They’re doing very well, no changes,” McLaughlin said of his two Derby hopefuls as they prepared for works at Prairie Meadows.  .

Enticed will also be one of the favorites to watch in the Holy Bull, which last year produced Irish War Cry, Gunnevera and Classic Empire as the top-3 finishers, and all three ran in the 2017 Kentucky Derby.

Avery Island and Enticed both closed at 29-1 in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) Pool 1 on Nov. 26. The KDFW Pool 2 opens February 9 with new odds and new Kentucky Derby hopefuls and will close for future wagers on Feb. 11.
