Betting Kentucky Derby Longshot Enticed

Enticed Could Produce a Big Exotic Score in Kentucky Derby

The 2017 Kentucky Derby post-time favorite won the race for the 5th year in a row. But when big longshots of 33-1 and 40-1 finished 2nd and 3rd, it triggered some big payouts in the $2 exact ($334), trifecta ($16,594) and life-changing superfecta ($151,949).

Here is a longshot to include in your Derby wagers if you’re looking for a big score, or at least consider before tossing him from your exotic bets. Enticed is 30-1 on the morning line for the 2018 Kentucky Derby.

Kentucky Derby Betting Guide

Enticed has five graded stakes races to his credit with a pair of wins including at Churchill Downs, along with a 4th, 3rd and 2nd in his most recent race the Wood Memorial as the 7-5 favorite. He stalked in 2nd the entire way and bumped twice with the winner in the stretch and kept fighting before getting shaken off by Vino Rosso. A solid 99 BRIS speed figure could have been better perhaps, along with his final 3/8 mile time had there not been some significant bumping with Vino Rosso.
Enticed has shown different running styles, and has the tactical speed to rate and make a closing kick from off the pace. In all six of his starts, he’s never had the lead in the stretch, but has made a solid late move to win three times and finish runner-up once, which was in his final Derby prep in the Wood Memorial. His speed figures are a cut below the top contenders in this year’s Derby, but his pedigree for the Derby’s classic distance is one of the best in the field as a son of Giant’s Causeway.

Enticed owns a win over Churchill Downs’ main track coming in last fall’s Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, who grew up in Lexington, 70 miles from Churchill Downs, bypassed the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with Enticed. Instead he raced him in late November over the Churchill Downs track where he won the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2). He defeated other Derby runners Promises Fulfilled (3rd), Lone Sailor (5th), Quip (7th) and Bravazo (10th).

Key Speed Figures and Stats for Enticed

  • Final 3/8 mile time in the Wood Memorial :38.30 seconds
  • Best BRIS Speed Figure of 104 in Gotham Stakes
  • A 121.6 BRIS Class Rating in the Gotham was the best of all horses in major Derby preps at the time

The final 3/8 mile time in the Wood Memorial may not be strong, but factoring in the interference in the stretch and that the Aqueduct surface that day put speed at a disadvantage and greatly favored stretch runners like the winner Vino Rosso, and we may have a hidden gem in Enticed. He’ll be written off by many but Enticed is another intriguing runner and offers plenty of value at a longshot price.
