Kentucky Derby Pool 2 Closes with 7 New Names

Good Magic, Bolt d’ Oro, McKinzie and Audible Lead Wagering Interests in Kentucky Derby Pool 2

The Road to the Kentucky Derby continued last weekend with the Sam F. Davis Stakes producing a nice long shot winner, as Flameaway (10-1) outdueled heavy favorite Catholic Boy (3-5) down the stretch to position himself for a run at the Kentucky Derby starting gate May 5 at Churchill Downs. But also over the weekend, more betting on the Derby was coming to a close as the Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) concluded Sunday, Feb. 11 with Pool 2 showing the mutual field (All Others) as the clear favorite (5-2) over 23 individual entries.

Good Magic and Bolt d’Oro are the two single entry favorites in the win pool, with both closing at 8-1 following three days of betting into Pool 2. Each had just over $33,000 wagered on them in the win pool. The next betting interests were McKinzie (9-1) and Audible (9-1), followed by Catholic Boy (16-1), Instilled Regard (18-1) and Solomini (19-1).

The new names for Pool 2 were Audible, Catholic Boy, Combatant, Instilled Regard, Mourinho, Retirement Fund, and Strike Power.

Pool 1 individuals that were also in the mutual field (All Others) for Pool 2 were Dak Attack, Engage, Givemeaminit, Gotta Go, Lone Sailor, Quip, and Talent Scout.

Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 2 – Final Odds and Gross Win Pool Wagering

The wagering interest in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager was evident, as total handle for Pool 2 was $521,649, up a whopping 58 percent from the corresponding pool in 2017 ($330,042). Win handle was $363,388, and exacta handle was $158,261. Last year, Pool 2 was held on the final weekend of January and was down 25 percent from 2016.

All wagering was suspended on Montauk (No. 15) just prior to the opening of Pool 2 when the colt’s connections informed track officials that he has been declared from Derby consideration.

The field has always been the favorite in the pool held at this time of year (originally Pool 1, now Pool 2) since Churchill Downs began offering parimutuel futures in 1999. Churchill Downs expanded from three pools to four in advance of the 2014 Kentucky Derby.

Pool 3 is set for March 9-11 and Pool 4 for April 6-8. The lone Kentucky Oaks futures pool will coincide with Pool 3.
