Kentucky Oaks Draw Complete with Favorite Monomoy Girl on Outside Post 14
The start of Derby week begins with the Kentucky Oaks draw Monday and the Kentucky Derby draw Tuesday. The Oaks/Derby double is a popular bet for fans, and will be more interesting this year with the Oaks favorite Monomoy Girl drawing the far outside post No. 14. With the Oaks and Derby draw a day earlier this year and moving forward, the 144th Kentucky Oaks had its post draw Monday and while the early odds suggest a two-horse race, there are some other fine fillies worth watching and wagering at longer odds.
Trainer Brad Cox has three fillies in this year’s Oaks including the favorite Monomy Girl (2-1), who has five wins and a 2nd place finish in six starts. She romped to a 5 ½ length win in the Ashland Stakes (G1) at Keeneland April 7 and will draw much betting support even from the far outside post.
Midnight Bisou is the West coast dominator and 5-2 second choice as she goes for her fourth straight win in 2018 breaking from the No. 10 post. Her only two defeats were by a nose. Twelve other fillies drew double-digit odds with My Miss Lilly (10-1), Coach Rocks (12-1) and Chocolate Martini (12-1) the next closest contenders. My Miss Lilly is a daughter of Tapit and won the Gazelle Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct April 7.
But at the end of the day, do the advance ‘morning line’ odds really mean anything? Trainer Dale Romans says no, as his filly Coach Rocks breaks from the No. 2 stall in the $1 million Kentucky Oaks.
“If she goes off at 12-1, I’m betting her,” Romans said as he left Churchill Downs Monday, and he was only half kidding. “I really thought she would be third choice. I guess that shows you how much handicapping of the fillies I’ve been doing.”
Coach Rocks has won 2-of-3 starts this year including the Gulfstream Oaks March 31. She is the daughter of 2013 Preakness winner Oxbow.
Rayya will garner interest for new trainer Bob Baffert. She won the UAE Oaks at Meydan and then finished 2nd against the boys in the UAE Derby March 31.
Monday was for fillies and the Kentucky Oaks is Friday, May 4.
Tuesday’s Derby draw can be streamed live at kentuckyderby.com starting at 11am ET, and the TwinSpires.com Morning Line Odds by Mike Battaglia will follow within 30 minutes of the draw. The 144th Kentucky Derby is Saturday, May 5.
