Three-year-old Mo Town will hope to deliver on his 7/2 odds as the favourite in this weekend’s 2017 Risen Star Stakes. Hosted by Fair Grounds, this is the first stop on the Derby trail which offers a 50-20-10-5 point disbursal for the top-four finishers. It is also one of the main warm up races for the Louisiana Derby.
Mo Town has not competed this season since closing out his juvenile campaign with a strong, winning performance at the 2016 Remsen but he remains one of the top choices in the Kentucky Derby Futures Wager. His pedigree and connections are all strong, especially given that his sire – Uncle Mo – is emerging as one of the top stallions in the country. Mo Town is a 15/1 midrange shot in the KDFW Pool 3 and is competing for attention with his half-brother Royal Mo.
Regardless of the futures market, Mo Town remains the clear cut option in the 2017 Risen Star unless you have some interest in Local Hero who is coming in at a mark of 4/1. There isn’t much to go on with this second choice given that his only race is a maiden special weight of 1 mile 70 yards which he won 1:42.49. He will be on his home turf at Fair Grounds but has plenty to do in order to live up to his supposed hype.
A pair of 6/1 options are generating a stir at the window as well. Guest Suite is a three-year-old gelding who won the Lecomte, often seen as a precursor for this race, while Girvin is coming off a runner-up finish at the 2017 Keith Gee Memorial Stakes.
Those four are pretty much your best options with Mo Town at the lead and either Guest Suite or Local Hero as your next choices.
Rounding out the 2017 Risen Star Stakes field is an unassuming band of longshots, a few of which that Mo Town has dispatched before. A sizeable field shouldn’t distract you from fixating on the top-three choices I’ve outlined.
