Oaklawn Park’s last three racing weeks of the current season are going to feature the highest purses in its history. This will be the the third time this meet purses will have increased.
Three stakes will see a large bump, while overnight purses will be increased by $1,000.
The three stakes that are getting a sizeable increase in purses are the Bachelor Stakes (going from $100,000 to $150,000), the Northern Spur (going from $125,000 to $150,000), and the Instant Racing (going from $125,000 to $150,000).
“We are extremely proud of the quality of racing we’ve offered this season and it will only get better heading into the last part of our meet,” said Oaklawn Director of Racing David Longinotti. “Our field size is among the highest in the country, with an average of 9.75, and two of our marquee 3-year-old stakes have had full 14-horse fields. Between the good weather and top-notch horses, the fans have responded and it shows in our ability to raise purses for a third time.”
Since the meet has began, $250,000 has been added to the stakes program at Oaklawn Park. The minimum purse is now $23,500. The opening maiden special weights races on January 15 saw the purses begin at $68,000; they’re now $76,000. The starting purse prize for allowance races was $75,000, and now they’re crossed the $80,000 plateau.
Those numbers help paint a picture of the increased wealth at Oaklawn Park. The 2016 meet concludes on April 16.
