Three Graded Stakes Saturday at Saratoga including Amsterdam
A big day of racing at Saratoga Saturday includes three graded stakes races headlined by the Jim Dandy with five Triple Crown horses Mohaymen, Destin, Laoban, Governor Malibu and Belmont Stakes winner Creator. But the undercard looks solid with Race 4’s Grade II $200,000 Amsterdam Stakes. Eight 3-year-olds will race 6 ½ furlongs on the dirt
The race is a local prep for the Grade I King’s Bishop later in the meet.
Maniacal (5/1) has shown good speed in each of his three starts and has two wins this year including last time out at this distance June 10 at Belmont. He’s posted a pair of strong works here in the last 10 days and should be sharp up front. Counterforce drew the rail and has a win and place in minor stakes but was a bust last out in the Grade II Woody Stevens at Belmont.
Trainer Todd Pletcher saddles another 5-1 shot in Ready Dancer with Javier Castellano aboard. He was ready for his two races over this track last August before going seven races without a win or place including three graded stakes tries. He won last out in allowance company June 25 at Belmont and breezed well in his lead up to this. He’s run some longer races, but should be better here.
King Kranz (3/1) is the favorite and should be a prime stalk and pounce candidate. The son of Munnings, a top extended-sprint sire, he’s finished in the money in 8-of-10 races and won last out at Belmont May 6 closing strong to win at six furlongs on a sloppy track.
Long shot bettors will look towards Quijote (12/1), who had a very sharp four furlong work here a week ago and has finished first or second in five of six races including three minor stakes. A fast pace could set up nicely for him and top jock Jose Ortiz.
