You can now not only order a Jeff Ruby steak, you can bet on the Jeff Ruby Stakes.
The one and only Kentucky Derby prep race at Turfway Park is being renamed. Inaugurated in 1972, the Spiral Stakes will now be known as the Jeff Ruby Stakes. The new deal is with the restauranteur Jeff Ruby (obviously) who is a racing fan and avid sponsor.
“We are delighted to partner with Jeff Ruby,” said Chip Bach, the general manager of Turfway Park. “He has a passion for Thoroughbred racing and his involvement brings fresh excitement to this race. Turfway Park was among the first to develop race sponsorships, and our Derby prep has had strong sponsor support since 1982. We’re proud to continue that tradition with a partner of Jeff Ruby’s stature.”
“We feel great about partnering with Turfway on its biggest day of the year. We both have strong brands with deep community roots and this is a natural fit. There are such terrific people involved on all sides of this and we can’t wait to bring the Jeff Ruby Experience to what has been a fantastic event for so many years,” said Ruby.
This past season, Jeff Ruby’s company sponsored John Velasquez, Javier Castellano and Jose Ortiz during the 2017 Triple Crown season and that’s significant because each won a leg this year. It was the first time in history that a sponsor accomplished this feat. “My support of the jockey community goes back many years,” Ruby continued. “I’m a racing enthusiast and have a sincere interest in all the people involved.”
The Jeff Ruby Stakes will be run out of Turfway Park on March 17th, 2018. It is unique in that it offers a 20-8-4-2 point split to the top four horses. The only other American based prep race for the derby that does this is the Lexington.
