As the northeast continues to set records for the cold, Aqueduct has had to keep plans for the first 2018 Kentucky Derby prep race of the New Year up in the frosty air. 2018 Jerome rescheduling has not been finalized yet as the state of New York remains iced over in an awful tundra that doesn’t seem to be letting up any time soon.
Windchill values of zero and below were the impetus for delaying the race, which is meant to be highlighted by Firenze Fire, a 1/1 even money favorite who will likely get the benefit of the doubt heading in to the race once 2018 Jerome rescheduling has been confirmed. This is pivotal race for the colt after an ugly, 7th place finish in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. The Jason Servis trained speedster is by and large the best of the bunch but will still have to prove his worth.
Expected to contend is Diamond King, a 7/2 second choice on the opening line. Undefeated through three races, Diamond King is a Quality Road offspring trained by Robert Reid. He recently clocked 1:24.45 over 7 furlongs.
Another horse to watch once 2018 Jerome rescheduling is determined is Seven Trumpets, a 4/1 third choice who has won a pair of 6 1/2 furlong allowances with times of just over 1:17.00. Also coming off a victory is Honor Up, an outright threat who has plenty of competitive experience with lacking results. He is 1-2-0 in six attempts but recently scored in a mile allowance at Aqueduct with a modest time of 1:40.84.
Longshots Old Time Revival, Regalian, Smooth B and expected pace setter Millionaire Runner all round out the field and none have dropped out even with the 2018 Jerome rescheduling making things a bit difficult.
