Top Sire Arch Dead at 21

Arch, who sired 11 grade I stakes winners, died yesterday from an apparent heart attack at the age of 21 at Claiborne Farm close to Paris, Kentucky, according to representative Bernie Sams. arch

In his stud career since 1991, Arch sired 58 total stakes winners, including the 11 grade I winners mentioned earlier, as well as 34 graded stakes winners and four champions. The total progeny earnings associated with Arch is more than $53 million.

The most notable sire of Arch is Blame, who put an end to Zenyatta’s winning streak in 2010, and won three grade I stakes. Other grade I winning sires include Archarcharch, Hymn Book, Pine Island, Grand Arch, and Love Theway Youare. Also a part of Arch’s sire stable: Horse of the Year Arravale, English champion Les Arcs, and South African sprint champion Overarching.

“We are saddened by the loss of Arch,” said Sams. “He was a classy stallion who had the ability to sire top-class horses that performed well both on the track and in the auction ring.”

At the world famous Keeneland January mixed sale, Arch led the way in terms of both gross and average as the lead sire, with the highlight being a $700,000 sale topper. He also took home the title of leading covering sire. His fee to stand in 2016 was set at $40,000.
