All 12 Races are for 2-Year-Olds Including Derby Prep Kentucky Jockey Club
The Road to the Kentucky Derby continues Saturday at Churchill Downs when 14 juveniles go the gate for the $200,000 Kentucky Jockey Club (G2). The list of horses who went on to become bona fide stars after competing in a Stars of Tomorrow race at Churchill Downs is truly impressive. From Gun Runner to Supper Saver, Fort Larned or the great Rachel Alexandra, it’s fun to envision the next great champion that we may be watching in this Kentucky Derby prep race.
The winner of the 1 1/16 mile Kentucky Jockey Club receives 10 points towards qualifying for the 2018 Kentucky Derby, while the next three finishers receive 4-2-1 points.
But the prevailing headline on Saturday’s Nov. 25 card at Churchill Downs is that all 12 races are for 2-year-olds. Whether it be first time starters, first time around two turns, first time on the turf, or first time to win, these races are intriguing as 2-year-old races provide handicappers a chance to evaluate pedigree and trainer date more closely, as those play a more prominent role in juvenile races.
Additionally, all 12 races have at least 10 two-year-olds entered, so the wagering options and opportunities for a bigger score are also greater. .
The $200,000 Golden Rod (G2) is the other graded stakes race on Churchill Downs Saturday card. A total of 12 two-year-old fillies will go 1 1/16 miles on the main track.
